Summary

Magical Hat no Buttobi Turbo! Daibouken (often shortened to Magical Hat's Turbo Flight! Adventure) is a quirky action‑platformer that feels like a cross between Vic Tokai’s Kid Kool and Psycho Fox. You guide the eponymous Hat across the seven islands of Usontō, hopping, punching, and collecting items from statuary while battling a boss at the end of each world.

A standout quirk is the roaming Roboggu, which doubles as a projectile and a shield when you need a quick defensive boost. The game sprinkles a generous variety of power‑ups: temporary invincibility, a freeze‑all‑enemies spell, a sky‑high jump, and even a helicopter air‑support call‑in. After each stage you can gamble a bit of luck in a simple chance mini‑game for extra lives or items.

Critics were split: Japanese magazines hovered around the 50‑60 % mark, whereas many European outlets praised it, with scores ranging from 70 % up to a perfect 100 % in Sega Power. Because Sega couldn’t secure the Magical Hat license abroad, the core engine was re‑skinned and released in 1991 as Decap Attack, featuring new characters, music, and level design while retaining the same fundamental gameplay.

Storyline

Magical Hat no Buttobi Turbo! Daibouken follows Hat, the modern descendant of the legendary hero known simply as Magical Hat. He journeys across the seven islands of Usontō, a chain of realms that guard the entrance to the Underworld. The original hero once battled an evil king and sealed the realm of Devildom, but the seal has begun to crumble. After falling into Devildom himself, Hat discovers that the same malevolent king is stirring again, threatening both the surface and the Underworld. Determined to fulfill his ancestor’s legacy, Hat must defeat the evil king and restore peace to the seven islands and the hidden underworld.
