Summary

Last Battle (also known as *Last Battle: Legend of the Final Hero*) feels like a stripped‑down martial‑arts beat ’em up that leans heavily on its predecessor Black Belt. You control Aarzak – the Western name for Kenshiro – and can punch or kick while standing, jumping or crouching, giving you six basic attacks. Defeating foes fills a power‑up meter; once it hits the threshold, Aarzak erupts into a super‑powered state that lets him unleash rapid blows for the rest of the stage. A timer sits in the lower‑right corner, but instead of an instant death it slowly saps your health until you finish the level.

The game is split into four chapters, each a collection of linear side‑scrolling stages and a few maze‑like dungeons that demand careful navigation. After every level a map shows your current spot and the routes you can take, and allies occasionally appear to boost your offense, defense, or restore health. Boss encounters are one‑on‑one and often require you to clear levels in a specific order, contributing to the title’s notorious difficulty.

Originally tied to the *Fist of the North Star* franchise, the Western release stripped all explicit references and toned down the graphic gore, replacing exploding heads with milder animations. Despite being a launch title for the Genesis in the U.S., critics were harsh: MegaTech gave it a 32 % score, calling it unenjoyable, while Sega Pro was a bit kinder at 69 %. Storyline

The Sega Genesis title Last Battle (known in Japan as Hokuto no Ken: Shinseikimatsu Kyūseishu Densetsu) adapts the later chapters of the Fist of the North Star manga, specifically chapters 137–210, which were also covered in the Hokuto no Ken 2 TV series. In this version the main hero Kenshiro is renamed Aarzak, while his companions Bat and Lin appear as Max and Alyssa.

The opening villain, Duke, is revealed to be Falco, and the three Rashō are reimagined as rebel generals of the empire. After Duke’s defeat, these generals escape and begin plotting revenge against Aarzak. Despite the name changes, the overall plot stays true to its source material.
