Summary

Last Battle (also known as Last Battle: Legend of the Final Hero) was one of the six games that launched the Sega Genesis in the U.S. It lets you play as Aarzak, a stripped‑down version of the manga hero Kenshiro, who punches and kicks while standing, jumping or crouching for six basic attacks. Defeating foes fills a power‑up meter; once full Aarzak enters a super‑powered state and dishes out rapid blows for the rest of the stage. Most stages are side‑scrolling runs with a timer that, instead of killing you, slowly drains your life gauge, adding a relentless pressure. The adventure is split into four chapters, each with linear routes and occasional maze‑like dungeons that require finding the correct path while avoiding traps. Allies appear to boost offense, defense or refill health, and boss battles pit you against tough one‑on‑one foes. The game’s difficulty is notorious, and the Western version stripped out the original Fist of the North Star violence, toning down blood and exploding heads. Critics were harsh—MegaTech rated it 32 % while Sega Pro gave a more generous 69 %—leaving it remembered as one of the Genesis’s weaker launch titles.

Storyline

The Sega Genesis title Last Battle (known in Japan as Hokuto no Ken: Shinseikimatsu Kyūseishu Densetsu) adapts the Fist of the North Star manga and anime. It draws from the later manga chapters 137–210, the same material covered in the Hokuto no Ken 2 TV series. The hero Kenshiro is renamed Aarzak, while his allies Bat and Lin appear as Max and Alyssa. The opening foe Duke is revealed to be Falco, and the three Rashō are re‑imagined as rebel generals of the empire who flee after Duke’s defeat to seek vengeance against Aarzak. Despite the name changes, the core plot stays faithful to its source, delivering the gritty, post‑apocalyptic battles fans expect.
