Summary
Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole (often just called Landstalker) drops you into an isometric world where every step feels like a tiny adventure. As Nigel, the treasure‑hunting protagonist, you can walk, jump, swing a sword, climb ropes and ladders, and even pick up and hurl objects—actions that stay consistent from the bustling towns to the darkest dungeons. The game’s charm lies in its blend of mythic monsters—ogres, skeletons, ghosts, golems—and clever environmental puzzles that demand platforming, switch‑pulling, and block‑moving to unlock new areas. Health is tracked by hearts, and you can boost both your vitality and attack power by finding gear or buying upgrades in the various villages you revisit. Optional side quests pepper the map, rewarding you with stronger weapons or shortcut warps that make traversing the island’s sprawling overworld a lot smoother, even if you never need them to finish the quest for King Nole’s treasure.
Storyline
In Landstalker – Le Trésor du Roi Nole (often just called Landstalker), the 88‑year‑old treasure hunter Nigel begins his quest in the Jypta Ruins, where he secures the Statue of Jypta and sells it in the port town of Kalva. There he meets the wood nymph Friday, who is pursued by the bumbling thieves Kayla, Ink and Wally because she knows a "feeling" about King Nole’s legendary treasure. Together they tumble into a river, are rescued by the red‑furred bear‑people of Massan, and later free the yellow‑furred tribe’s leader Fara, earning a clue toward the treasure.
Their journey takes them to the lighthouse town of Ryuma, where they rescue the mayor from the thieves, acquire a dragon lithograph, and confront the rogue wizard Mir. After defeating Mir, Nigel learns that the Duke Mercator, who later orders him to restore Ryuma’s lighthouse, is actually Mir’s brother and a key obstacle to the treasure. Nigel restores the Sunstone, frees the enslaved town of Verla, and receives a legendary sword and a magical axe that can fell trees with a single swing.
Guided by Friday, Nigel battles the Duke’s dragon‑like henchman Zak, navigates the Greenmaze, and finally reaches the underground dungeon where King Nole hid his hoard. He defeats the restless spirit of King Nole, survives the Duke’s betrayal, and confronts Gola, the Dragon God worshipped by the ancient king. After vanquishing Gola, Nigel claims the treasure; in the original Japanese and European ending the gold vanishes, but Nigel simply suggests taking Friday on to new adventures.
Thus, Landstalker weaves a tale of ancient tyranny, cursed treasure, and a quirky partnership that drives Nigel and Friday across islands, dungeons, and mythic ruins in pursuit of King Nole’s lost fortune.
