Summary

Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole (often just called Landstalker) drops you into an isometric world where every move feels like a tiny adventure. I spend most of my time swinging Nigel’s sword, leaping across platforms, and tossing objects to trigger hidden switches—actions that stay consistent from the bustling towns to the darkest dungeons. The game’s charm lies in its blend of classic RPG gear upgrades and brain‑teasing puzzles; you’ll swap out swords and armor for stronger versions while hunting keys, moving blocks, and timing jumps to bypass traps. Monsters range from goofy ogres to eerie skeletons, and each boss fight feels like a satisfying payoff for the maze‑like corridors you’ve just navigated. Optional side quests pepper the map, rewarding you with extra attack power or handy warp shortcuts, but you can still finish the game without them, making the experience both rewarding and forgiving.

Storyline

Landstalker – also known simply as Landstalker – follows Nigel, an 88‑year‑old treasure hunter who begins his quest in the rolling‑boulder dungeon of Jypta Ruins. After selling the Statue of Jypta, he meets a wood nymph named Friday, who is being pursued by three bumbling thieves: Kayla, Ink and Wally. Friday admits she only has a vague feeling about the location of King Nole’s legendary treasure, and the pair set off together.

The duo tumbles into a river and is rescued by the red‑furred bear‑people of Massan. When Nigel awakens he travels to the neighboring yellow‑furred village of Gumi, where he breaks a curse on the tribe’s leader Fara and earns a clue toward the treasure. Their adventure then leads them west to the lighthouse town of Ryuma, which has been raided by the same thieves.

In Ryuma Nigel rescues the mayor and discovers a dragon lithograph that Friday identifies as another treasure clue. The thieves capture Friday and demand the lithograph, forcing Nigel into a tense standoff. After freeing Friday, Nigel’s deeds catch the eye of Duke Mercator.

The Duke orders Nigel to defeat the wizard Mir, who is terrorizing a nearby tower. After a hard‑won victory, Mir reveals the truth about King Nole’s hoard and the Duke’s betrayal, then later teleports Nigel to safety during a clash with the Duke’s dragon‑like henchman Zak. With Mir’s help Nigel obtains a magical axe, rescues the Princess of Maple, and restores the Sunstone that powers Ryuma’s lighthouse.

Finally, Nigel and Friday breach the underground labyrinth where King Nole hid his treasure, battling the restless spirit of the former king, the Duke, and the dragon god Gola. After vanquishing Gola, Nigel claims the treasure; in the original Japanese and European versions the gold vanishes, but Nigel simply suggests new adventures with Friday.
