Summary
Kid Chameleon is a Sega Genesis platformer best known for its shape‑shifting mechanic. The hero, Casey, dons masks that turn him into assorted forms, each with its own hit points, attacks and Diamond Powers. The game packs over a hundred flag‑marked levels, peppered with hidden teleporters that can drop you into secret routes or even entirely different stages. There’s no password or save function, so each play‑through relies on memorisation and quick reflexes. This design fuels both the charm and the occasional frustration.
Critics praised the colourful graphics, tight controls and a soundtrack that rides the early‑90s synth‑rock wave, earning it an 82 % from Sega Force and an 89 % from Console XS. The constant variety from mask‑changing kept reviewers intrigued, though some noted the lack of challenge and the missing save system as downsides. Kid Chameleon later resurfaced in collections like the Sega Smash Pack 2, the Sega Genesis Collection, and the Ultimate Genesis Collection, and saw Virtual Console releases worldwide in 2007. A short‑lived comic strip also ran in Sonic the Comic during the early ’90s, cementing its cult‑status among retro fans.
Storyline
Kid Chameleon drops into a virtual‑reality video game that has gone rogue, its artificial intelligence holding his fellow kids hostage. The player guides the Kid through 103 levels—about half on the main flag‑to‑flag path and 32 hidden “Elsewhere” stages—using teleporters that can jump between areas or open alternate routes. Along the way he finds masks that transform him into different characters, each with unique abilities, extra hit points and Diamond Powers that cost collected diamonds. Collecting a duplicate mask restores its health, and bonuses are awarded for beating time limits, avoiding damage, or skipping prizes. The climax pits the Kid against Heady Metal, the escaped boss of the game’s “Wild Side” mode, who has been capturing children; defeating Heady Metal frees the trapped peers and ends the rogue AI’s control.
