Summary

Journey from Darkness: Strider Returns (often called Strider Returns) feels like a love‑letter to the original arcade classic, but with a distinctly early‑90s console twist. The game puts you in the shoes of Hinjo, wearing the same lean sprite that appeared on the Genesis Strider, yet he now lobs shuriken projectiles after you stock them up—replacing the rifle that defined earlier ports. Sliding under low ceilings and dashing through five sprawling stages, you can choose Hiryu’s old cypher or a new “sweeping” version, and a ring of collectible orbs blankets you when you clash with a boss.

Visually, the Genesis build shoves massive, crisply drawn characters onto richly detailed backdrops, and even squeezes in digitized voice snatches that give the corridors a gritty vibe. Critics noted the slower tempo and occasional choppy animation, but praised the sheer scope of the levels and the polish of the sprite work. For anyone who remembers battling a cyber‑ninja in the original, Strider Returns delivers a nostalgic yet oddly distinct ride on the Mega Drive.

Storyline

Journey From Darkness: Strider Returns (often just called Strider Returns) puts the legendary Strider Hinjo back in the spotlight. The game opens with Grandmaster Meio—listed as the Evil Master in the manual—plotting revenge after his earlier defeat. He has positioned his Prison Ship above Earth, threatening to turn the planet into a single black hole. Meanwhile, a terrorist group has seized the Princess of Planet Magenta. Hinjo’s mission is clear: stop Meio and rescue the captured princess.

Meio also orders his minions to kidnap Lexia, using her as insurance against any Strider interference. The Prison Ship serves as the looming backdrop for Hinjo’s assault, forcing him to battle through a series of hostile environments. Each of the five stages tests his abilities, from high‑speed platforming to intense boss encounters. By dismantling the ship’s defenses, Hinjo aims to prevent the black‑hole catastrophe and free Lexia.

In the final act, Hinjo reaches the princess’s holding cell and engages the terrorist leader in a climactic showdown. With the princess rescued and Lexia safe, the threat of the black hole is averted. The game’s storyline mirrors the original computer version, delivering a concise but action‑packed narrative that rewards skilled play.
