Summary

John Madden Football (known in Europe as John Madden American Football) broke the mold for early ’90s sports titles. Instead of the side‑view camera most games used, it put you above and behind the quarterback, letting you pick a receiver on the fly and feel the rush of audibles and weather‑affected fields. The roster is a quirky mix of 16 generic teams that echo real‑NFL colors, plus a hidden All‑Madden squad that rewards players who dig deeper.

EA expected modest sales, but the game surged to roughly 400,000 copies, turning the Genesis into a true competitor against Nintendo’s stronghold. Critics took notice too—Computer and Video Games gave it a 95% score, Sega Power 92%, and it snagged the 1990 Golden Joystick Award for best 16‑bit console game. Its legacy was cemented when the Strong National Museum of Play inducted it into the World Video Game Hall of Fame in 2018.
