Summary
Joe & Mac, often remembered by its quirky subtitle Caveman Ninja, feels like a prehistoric mash‑up of Contra’s run‑and‑gun pace and Gauntlet’s ever‑draining health bar. You sprint through vivid, cartoon‑styled stages armed with boomerangs, fire‑spitting flints and even electric stone wheels, while a timer‑like health meter silently chips away until you find a health pickup or defeat a boss. The two‑player mode is a wild ride: both green‑haired Joe and blue‑haired Mac can accidentally bonk each other, turning cooperative chaos into a strategic dance of timing and positioning. Critics praised the Genesis port for its bright colors, bouncy sound effects and faithful arcade feel, though they noted the controls could be finicky and the simultaneous‑player damage a bit frustrating. Overall, the game’s humor, varied weaponry and the freedom to choose different routes after each boss keep it feeling fresh even after countless runs.
Storyline
Joe & Mac (also known as Caveman Ninja) follows two colorful cavemen—green‑haired Joe and blue‑haired Mac—as they battle through prehistoric landscapes to rescue a group of women abducted by a rival tribe. The Japanese version opens with the duo dragging the cavewomen by their hair as they exit a hut, a scene that was cut from the U.S. release. Gameplay is straightforward: defeat enemies, overcome platform hazards, and ultimately confront the final boss. After the showdown, players can select one of three exits, each triggering a slightly different ending sequence that wraps up the rescue mission.
