Summary

Hellfire is a fast‑paced horizontal shooter that lets you steer a lone fighter through six increasingly brutal stages, each capped by a memorable boss. What really sets it apart is the freedom to point your fire in any direction—forward, backward, straight up or down, or even four‑way diagonal—so you can line up shots on hidden guns or dodge swarms in creative ways. The ship starts with four core weapons that you can boost by grabbing the iconic “P” icons, while “S” icons crank up speed and “B” icons stock up the powerful Hellfire bomb introduced in the Genesis port. That version also adds a protective shield and a satellite “option” that trails your craft, plus an arranged soundtrack and a tighter color palette that gives the arcade action a distinct 16‑bit flavor. When you get hit, you lose both firepower and speed, and you either respawn at the last checkpoint or instantly, depending on the mode you choose. After the final stage the game loops, cranking up the difficulty for those who can’t get enough of the relentless, diagonal‑shot chaos. The title saw releases from Masaya in Japan, Seismic in North America, Sega in Europe, and a 2020 Retro‑Bit re‑issue for collectors.

Storyline

Set in the year 2998, humanity has spread across the galaxy and built a peaceful, prosperous society. A mysterious space phenomenon called the Black Nebula begins to engulf human‑controlled galaxies, and the robotic dictator Super Mech is revealed as its creator. The Earth’s Space Federation dispatches Captain Lancer, a skilled pilot of the CNCS1 spacecraft, which is armed with the powerful Hellfire weapon.

In the Sega Genesis version of Hellfire, Lancer launches a surprise assault against Super Mech and the Black Nebula. After a fierce battle, he destroys the spreading nebula and safely returns to Earth, ending the threat.
