Summary

Gunship on the Sega Mega Drive (known to many of us as the Genesis) is a curious off‑shoot of MicroProse’s original helicopter sim. Probe Software handled the conversion while U.S. Gold published it, and the cartridge never made it beyond PAL territories, even though a U.S. launch was slated for March 1993.

Unlike its PC ancestor, this version drops the deep flight‑sim mechanics for a more arcade‑flavored experience. The game mixes top‑down helicopter combat with side‑scrolling shoot‑‘em‑up stages, giving the Apache a faster, more reflex‑driven feel that feels almost like a retro shooter rather than a simulation.

Because it was Europe‑only, the Mega Drive Gunship has become a collector’s oddity. I often hear fellow retro fans remark on how the limited release and the shift in gameplay make it a standout curiosity in the otherwise simulation‑heavy MicroProse catalog.
