Summary
Growl’s Sega Genesis incarnation strips the arcade’s chaotic four‑player mayhem down to a solo showdown, but it keeps the core roster of forest rangers—now named Gen, Burn, Khan and Jack. The controls mirror the original joystick‑and‑two‑button layout, and you can still unleash the screen‑clearing special attack, though on the Genesis it costs a slice of your health each time.
Health recovery is no longer automatic between stages; instead you hunt for hidden apples tucked inside crates. The weapon roster stays true to the arcade, with melee tools like a pipe, sword and whip, plus throwables and firearms. Notably, the M‑16 swaps for an AK‑47, and when ammo runs dry the guns become blunt melee sticks. The cavern level received a full redesign, and the game’s animal allies—eagles, deer and even an elephant—still appear after you rescue them.
All four characters are playable, but the experience is strictly single‑player, making the Genesis version a focused, nostalgic beat‑‘em‑up for anyone who loved the original arcade brawl.
Storyline
Growl puts you in the role of a forest ranger in the early 20th century, tasked with protecting the local wildlife from a band of evil poachers who are driving the animals toward extinction. As you chase the poachers through the forest, rescued creatures such as an eagle, a herd of deer, and even an elephant will come to your aid, helping you fend off the threat.
