Summary
Global Gladiators (sometimes called Mick and Mack: Global Gladiators) drops you into a bright, eco‑centric platformer where the two teenage heroes must gather Golden Arches across four wildly themed worlds. Ronald McDonald makes a brief cameo at the start and finish, while the duo wields a Super‑Soaker‑style blaster that fires gooey projectiles to clear the path.
The game’s birth is a classic ‘90s hustle story: Virgin Interactive lured programmer David Perry from the UK to its new Irvine studio, promising a fast‑track McDonald’s title. Perry set up shop in a Laguna‑Beach‑overlooking apartment – “like living in Baywatch,” he joked – and repurposed tools from earlier Virgin projects. Artist Mike Dietz, background designer Christian Laursen, and composer Tommy Tallarico filled the world with crisp sprites and rave‑infused tunes, while the underlying engine would later power Cool Spot and Disney’s Aladdin.
After the Genesis launch, European teams (with Graftgold and Krisalis) ported the game to the Master System, Game Gear, and Amiga. A Super Nintendo and Game Boy version were fully built but never saw the light of day due to licensing hiccups, though prototypes have surfaced online.
Critics praised the title’s challenging difficulty, polished animation, and energetic soundtrack, earning scores in the low‑90s from several magazines. Its unexpected success helped cement Perry’s reputation and opened the door for Virgin’s later collaborations with Disney on blockbuster titles.
