Summary
Whenever I dive into the Sega Genesis classic Ghouls ’n Ghosts, I’m reminded how a 1988 Capcom arcade hit became one of Japan’s top earners—eighth highest‑grossing that year. The 1989 Genesis port, programmed by Yuji Naka, turned heads in the West, scooping Electronic Gaming Monthly’s Game of the Year, Best Graphics, Best Sequel and Coolest Boss honors, plus awards from Computer Entertainer and VideoGames & Computer Entertainment. Its rugged difficulty and tight controls earned praise from magazines like MegaTech, which called it a “truly superb” conversion. The game has resurfaced on modern platforms: a 2005 handheld combo with Street Fighter II, Wii Virtual Console in 2007, the 2019 Genesis Mini and even Nintendo’s Classics service in 2023.
In play I control the knight Arthur, who can fire upward and downward while airborne—a rare tweak for side‑scrollers. Hidden treasure chests erupt when I jump in the right spot, granting new weapons, gold armor or a transforming magician. Gold armor builds charge for a strong magic blast, and each weapon has its own special attack except the special weapon itself. The game packs six stages, but the first five must be cleared twice before the final boss gate opens, forcing mastery of every upgrade.
Storyline
Set three years after the events of Ghosts ’n Goblins, Ghouls ’n Ghosts finds the kingdom plunged into chaos as vengeful ghosts and their ghoul minions unleash a deadly holocaust, striking villagers with blinding beams of light. Sir Arthur arrives too late to save Princess Prin‑Prin, whose soul is ripped from her body before his eyes. Determined, the knight embarks on a perilous trek through cursed lands toward the infernal castle. There he must confront Lucifer and his legion of demons, battling through hordes of undead and monstrous foes. Victory will free Prin‑Prin and restore the souls of all the fallen villagers.
