Summary

Ghostbusters on the Sega Genesis (often just called Ghostbusters) feels like a wild mix of side‑scrolling run‑and‑gun and platforming. I jump into one of three cartoony Ghostbusters—Venkman, Ray or Egon—each with its own speed and firepower, and the oversized heads instantly remind me of the movies. The positron gun can blast in any direction, and as I clear rooms I capture the small green ghosts that appear after defeating mid‑level ‘middle ghosts’, selling them for cash. Between the six distinct stages—four haunted houses that can be tackled in any order, a medieval castle that unlocks later, and the final showdown—I spend that money at in‑game shops for three‑way shots, flame guns, bombs, shields and even food to refill health. The bosses are straight out of the films, from Slimer to the Stay‑Puft Marshmallow Man, and each must be captured after being knocked out. With 22 soundtrack options, including the Ray Parker Jr. theme, the game manages to feel fresh even though it’s not related to the earlier Activision title despite a lingering copyright notice.

Storyline

The Ghostbusters (Sega Genesis) start off low on business when a sudden surge of calls floods the city, even hinting at the return of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man—though it’s not the movie’s original. Each of the four opening residential levels hides a piece of a stone tablet, which the team must recover by clearing out ghosts and defeating mid‑level specters before confronting a main boss like Slimer. After assembling the tablet, the heroes unintentionally open a portal to an evil realm, releasing a horde of spirits and the dark deity Janna. A hidden fifth stage set in a medieval castle leads to the final showdown, where the Ghostbusters defeat Janna, claim a mystical gem, and fuse it with the tablet to seal the portal and save New York City.
