Game Info
Summary
Genghis Khan II – Clan of the Gray Wolf drops you into a grand turn‑based sandbox where you can either unite the Mongol tribes as Temujin or launch a world‑wide conquest from any of the era’s major powers. The game blends macro‑management of economy, population and trade with micro‑decisions about family ties, letting you marry off daughters or appoint sons as governors to keep provinces loyal. Every action costs turn points, so you constantly prioritize whether to develop a city, raise an army or negotiate a marriage alliance. Random events—typhoons, droughts, epidemics or bountiful harvests—can swing your fortunes, while the optional battle mode lets you command troops directly or hand the fight to a trusted general. The US release stripped out the harem mini‑game, focusing the experience on political and military strategy. Originally spread across dozens of platforms, the title even resurfaced on the Wii Virtual Console, and critics praised its deep yet accessible blend of tactics and strategy, earning an 83% score from Electronic Games and four‑star praise from Computer Gaming World.
Storyline
Genghis Khan II – Clan of the Gray Wolf, often shortened to Genghis Khan II, is a Sega Genesis turn‑based strategy game that lets you rewrite the Mongol rise. The campaign is split into four historical scenarios.
Scenario 1 starts in 1184 AD on the Mongolian steppe. You can command Temujin, Jamukha, Togril Khan or Tayan Khan and must unite all of Mongolia by 1212 AD. Victory unlocks the later stages. This part focuses on internal tribal rivalry.
Scenario 2, “Genghis Khan’s Grand Ambition,” expands the map to the known world of the early 13th century. Playable powers include the Mongols under Genghis Khan, the Kamakura Shogunate (Minamoto Sanetomo), the Khorezm Empire, the Ghuri Sultanate, England under John Lackland, and France under Philip II; the Korean version adds Goryeo. Each nation has unique strengths—for example, only Japan can draft Samurai. The goal is global conquest.
Scenario 3, “The Birth of the Yuan Dynasty,” is set in 1274 AD with Kublai Khan as ruler. Available factions are the Yuan Dynasty (Kublai), Kamakura (Hojo), Il‑Khan (Abaga), Mameluke (Baybars), Byzantine (Michael VIII) and Sicilian (Charles I). Again, you aim to dominate the world.
World Conquest, the fourth scenario, unlocks after you unite Mongolia in Scenario 1. Beginning in 1185 AD, the same leader now commands the full Mongol hordes with the eight best generals and a top advisor. Additional playable factions are Kamakura (Minamoto Yoritomo), the Ayyubids (Saladin), Byzantine (Isaac II), Holy Roman Empire (Frederick Barbarossa) and Angevin Kingdom (Richard I). The final objective is total world domination.
