Summary

Fatal Fury: King of Fighters (often just called Fatal Fury) stands out on the Sega Genesis thanks to its two‑lane battle system – each stage splits into a foreground and a background row that you can jump between, adding a subtle depth to the usual 2D fights. The controls stay classic with an eight‑directional stick and three buttons for punch, kick and throw, while each character still boasts a handful of command‑based special moves.

The Genesis port trims the roster, relegating Hwa Jai and Billy Kane to cameo roles and limiting single‑player opponents to the three core fighters. A neat twist lets both players select the CPU‑controlled characters in Versus mode, and the bonus arm‑wrestling round tests your button‑mashing speed.

Designed by former Capcom veteran Takashi Nishiyama, the game was his personal answer to Street Fighter II, and even the final bosses draw inspiration from The Godfather, giving the showdown a cinematic flair.

Storyline

Garou Densetsu – Shukumei no Tatakai, known in the West as Fatal Fury: King of Fighters, follows orphan brothers Terry and Andy Bogard. After being adopted by master martial artist Jeff Bogard, they witness his murder at the hands of Geese Howard, a ruthless crime boss who also runs Southtown’s underworld. Determined to avenge Jeff, the brothers swear to spend ten years honing their skills—Terry blending street fighting with Hakkyokuseiken, and Andy mastering Shiranui‑ryū Ninjutsu and Koppōken in Japan.

In 1991 Geese announces the King of Fighters tournament in Southtown City, promising the victor a chance to confront him. Terry reunites with Andy, and the pair recruit Japanese Muay‑Thai champion Joe Higashi. They also spar with their mentor Tung Fu Rue, who tests whether they are ready for Geese.

During the tournament Andy and Joe are badly wounded after defeating Raiden and Hwa Jai, leaving Terry to battle Billy Kane and then Geese himself. Terry defeats Billy, wins the tournament, and after a forced capture battles Geese atop his tower, ending the fight with a decisive jump kick that sends Geese plummeting to his death. With revenge fulfilled, Andy returns to Japan to continue training, while Joe heads back to Thailand.
