Summary
Fatal Fury 2, known in Japan as Garō Densetsu 2: Aratanaru Tatakai, made its way from SNK’s arcade cabinets to the Sega Genesis thanks to Takara’s 1994 port. The conversion kept the series’ signature two‑plane battle system, letting players hop between foreground and background with a simple Light Punch + Light Kick combo. New moves like the Power Attack that shoves an opponent onto the opposite plane, the evasive counter after a guard, and the high‑damage Desperation Move at low health added fresh tactical depth. The roster introduced two characters who would become staples of SNK’s fighting universe: Kim Kaphwan, the first Korean Taekwondo fighter, and Mai Shiranui, the franchise’s iconic female star. Even the four boss fighters could be unlocked with secret codes, giving the Genesis version a surprising amount of replay value. Critics praised the Genesis edition for its faithful graphics and six‑button controller support, noting it captured the Neo Geo feel despite the console’s hardware limits. Sound effects drew some flak, but the overall package earned a spot on Mega’s Top 50 Mega Drive games and later landed on Complex’s list of the best fighting games ever, largely for cementing Mai’s status as a gaming sex symbol.
Storyline
Garou Densetsu 2 – Aratanaru Tatakai (commonly called Fatal Fury 2) picks up a year after the events of Fatal Fury: King of Fighters and the death of Geese Howard. A mysterious nobleman now sponsors a worldwide "King of Fighters" tournament, drawing both veterans and fresh faces to the ring. In single‑player mode the nobleman systematically defeats the original Fatal Fury fighters, hunting the person who toppled Geese.
The playable roster features eight warriors: returning heroes Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard and Joe Higashi, plus newcomers Big Bear, Jubei Yamada, Cheng Sinzan, Kim Kaphwan and Mai Shiranui. After clearing all eight characters—including a clone of the player’s own fighter—the contest shifts to the boss gauntlet. Each newcomer brings a distinct style, from Big Bear’s Australian face wrestling to Mai’s kunoichi techniques.
The final challenge consists of four non‑playable bosses: Billy Kane, Axel Hawk, Laurence Blood and Wolfgang Krauser, each with personal grudges or ambitions. Defeating them concludes the tournament and reveals the nobleman’s true motive. As thegamesdb notes, the three lone wolves—Andy, Joe and Terry—return after a year of steel‑forging training to clash with the world’s toughest opponents in the "Sultan of Slugs" Battle Royale.
