Summary

I still remember sinking my thumb into the hand‑drawn sprites of Gargoyles on the Genesis, feeling the blend of classic cartoon charm and surprisingly sharp CGI robots. The five‑level run lets Goliath swing, grapple and even boost his wing‑powered jump to traverse Manhattan rooftops, grimy subways, and a Viking‑siege‑laden castle. Each stage ends with a memorable boss, and the weapon‑free combat feels oddly satisfying – no health packs, just punches, throws and wall‑climbs. What really stuck with me was learning that the source code was opened to the public in 2012, a rare glimpse behind Disney Interactive’s curtain, and seeing how the game later resurfaced as a fully remastered package for modern consoles after a D23 tease in 2022. The recent trailer promising updated visuals, achievements and a physical release via Limited Run feels like a perfect excuse to revisit a title that once held its own next to Earthworm Jim 2 and Aladdin.

Storyline

Gargoyles for the Sega Genesis loosely follows the animated series’ plot. You play as the stone‑clad hero Goliath, whose mission is to destroy the Eye of Odin, a cursed talisman that grants its holder terrifying power. The artifact’s most recent owner, the treacherous Demona, becomes the game’s primary antagonist. Five distinct levels are linked by short cinematics that push the story forward, and each stage ends with a boss fight.
Goliath battles Viking raiders who once pillaged Castle Wyvern, then faces futuristic robotic enemies in modern settings like Manhattan rooftops and a subway tunnel. The mix of medieval and high‑tech foes reflects the series’ blend of myth and city‑scape action. By the final showdown, Goliath must confront Demona and the Eye to prevent its corrupting influence from spreading.
