Storyline

Gaiares (sometimes just called Gaia) opens in the year 3000 – some sources list 3008 – when Earth has been turned into a toxic, radioactive wasteland, barely habitable for the few remaining humans. The alien space‑pirate fleet Gulfer, commanded by the ruthless Queen ZZ Badnusty, intends to harvest the planet’s pollution and forge weapons of mass destruction. The United Star Cluster of Leezaluth issues a stark warning: if Gulfer cannot be stopped, Leezaluth will be forced to supernova the Sun to prevent a wider war, but if humanity prevails, Leezaluth will use its technology to restore Earth’s former beauty. Dan Dare – known as Diaz in the Japanese version – is a young ace pilot chosen to fly a new starfighter equipped with the experimental TOZ System, a powerful weapon supplied by Leezaluth. The TOZ System is operated by Alexis, an emissary (and in some versions, a princess) from Leezaluth who also serves as Dan’s love interest.
