Summary

Final Zone (known in Japan as FZ Senki Axis) is a striking isometric scrolling shooter that still feels fresh on the Genesis. I’m constantly amazed by the NAP suit’s load‑out system: you can stash 14 of the 20 weapons you’ll find, but you can only wield two at once—one mounted on the arm and another on the back—each delivering a distinct attack pattern. The game rewards careful planning, because losing too much suit integrity not only ends your run but also strips away the weapons you’ve hoarded, forcing you to rethink your strategy on the fly.

The level design pushes you to hunt down specific enemy types before the boss appears, turning each stage into a tactical scavenger hunt. Weapon variety is huge, from rapid‑fire lasers to homing missiles, and swapping gear mid‑run feels satisfying. The re‑release by Ratalaika Games in 2025 brings this classic to modern consoles, preserving the original’s challenge while polishing the controls for today’s players.

If you love mastering a deep arsenal while navigating a sleek, diagonal‑scrolling battlefield, Final Zone is a must‑play that proves the 1990s could still surprise us.

Storyline

In FZ Senki Axis ~ Final Zone (often just called Final Zone), you step into the boots of Howard Bowie, a celebrated soldier of the El Sharia Military Nation’s foreign legion and the commander of the elite unit known as “Team Undead.” The game is set a century ahead, in a world where weapons of mass destruction have been outlawed and combat is fought in futuristic New Age Power Suits (NAP). Howard pilots the K‑19 Phantom NAP on a daring mission to breach enemy lines and reach the heavily fortified Point A‑46K Bloody Axis. His objective: to locate and destroy the last remaining weapon of mass destruction still hidden behind enemy defenses. The storyline blends sci‑fi warfare with a classic side‑scrolling action feel, giving players a clear, high‑stakes purpose as they battle through the Axis stronghold.
