Summary
Flashback (sometimes called Flashback: The Quest for Identity) feels like a timeācapsule of earlyā90s cinematic gaming. The Genesis version dazzles with handādrawn backdrops and rotoscoped animation that give Conradās movements a fluidity youād expect from a CDāROM title, even though it lives on a cartridge. The developers used a unique videoācapture methodātracing live footage onto transparenciesāto achieve that smooth, PrinceāofāPersiaāstyle action.
Each of the seven sprawling levels is built from static screens that stack vertically, forcing you to jump, climb, ride elevators and even drop down to lower platforms. Conradās limited health is represented by a rechargeable force shield, while his pistol never runs out of ammo, and a portable force field can be deployed as a temporary barrier. Lateāgame, a teleportation device lets you fling yourself into otherwise unreachable spots, turning spatial puzzles into clever braināteasers.
What really sticks with me is how the game balances platforming, shooting and problemāsolving without ever feeling disjointed. The design philosophy mirrors Delphineās earlier title Another World, but Flashback leans more heavily into exploration and largeāscale level design.
Critically, the Genesis port was a smash hit: it topped sales charts, earned a spot in the Guinness World Records as the bestāselling French game ever, and still shows up on retroāgaming ābest ofā lists from Mega, EGM and GamesMaster. For anyone who loves a blend of slick animation and thoughtful puzzles, Flashback remains a standout experience.
Storyline
In Flashback, the year is 2142 and intelligence agent Conrad B. Hart awakens in a jungle on the alien world Titan with no memory of how he got there. A recording of himself urges him to find his friend Ian in the city of New Washington, where he rescues Ian from a police raid and uses a regenerator device to restore his lost memories. The restored memories reveal that Conradās visor, designed to analyse molecular density, inadvertently uncovered an alien race called Morphs that have infiltrated human society, prompting him to send a digital copy of his memories to Ian as a safeguard.
After learning that the only way off Titan is to win a ticket in the gladiatorial Death Tower and to acquire forged papers through dangerous jobs, Conrad completes both tasks and returns to Earth, only to find Morph infiltrators waiting for him. He breaks into a hidden Morph base beneath a nightclub, overhears their plan to conquer Earth, and is captured when a vent collapses.
Escaping the base, Conrad discovers a teleport to the Morph home planet and meets a human prisoner, Phillip Howard Clark. Phillip is executed but gives Conrad an atomic charge intended to destroy the Master Brain that controls the Morphs.
Guided by Phillipās voice, Conrad plants the charge on an unstable platform above the planetās core, triggers a tremor that drops the charge into the core, and watches the planet explode. He escapes in a Morph spacecraft, enters suspended animation as his ship drifts into space, setting the stage for the sequel Fade to Black.
