Summary

Playing ESWAT: City Under Siege feels like stepping into a neon‑lit futuristic megacity where the streets are clogged with armed soldiers and hulking robots rather than the usual bank‑robbers of earlier arcade releases. The early stages push you to rely on crisp reactions and your service pistol, but once the tougher enemies appear the game hands you the cyber suit—a bulky armor that adds both protection and a hefty fire‑power upgrade, turning each encounter into a satisfying power shift. The Genesis port swaps the arcade’s straight‑line corridors for platform‑filled side‑scrolling zones, giving the run‑and‑gun action a Shinobi‑style fluidity that still feels true to the original’s aesthetic. What I love most is how the cartridge kept the arcade’s graphics edge and later resurfaced in Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection, letting a new generation experience its bright, pixel‑perfect design. Critical buzz was solid too—averaging 68 % on GameRankings, earning a 92 % score from MegaTech, and landing at #32 on Mega’s 1992 “Top Mega Drive Games of All Time” list.

Storyline

ESWAT: City Under Siege drops you into a near‑future metropolis called Liberty, where you play as rookie cyber‑police officer Duke Oda. His first missions involve clearing the streets of a massive crime wave and taking down the most wanted felons.

The plot thickens when the high‑tech terrorist organization E.Y.E., described as the largest and most powerful terrorist group on Earth, begins a campaign to seize total control of the city. After surviving the second level Duke is promoted and equipped with the ICE Combat Suit, a powered armor that turns him into a walking weapon.

The final confrontation pits Duke against the leader of E.Y.E., revealed to be an artificial‑intelligence robot intent on mass‑producing its own ICE suits and dominating Liberty.
