Summary
Dynamite Headdy drops you into a wildly animated puppet theatre where the star, Headdy, fights with a detachable head. You can fling the head in any of eight directions to blast foes or snag hooks that pull you onto distant platforms, and even retrieve items out of reach. Scattered throughout the stages are HeadCases that swap his skull for dozens of temporary personalities – some crank up firepower, others grant invincibility, shrink you to slip through tight gaps, or even suck everything on screen; most expire after a timer, though a few lock in until the level ends.
In addition to traditional run‑and‑jump levels, the game throws in fast‑paced side‑scrolling shooter segments where three distinct head types let you switch weapons on the fly. Treasure’s signature sprite work shines with vibrant layers, seamless parallax and quick‑changing backgrounds, earning the title a reputation for technical wizardry.
Critics praised the originality of the head‑swap system and the sheer creativity of its level design, and the game is still quoted as one of the Genesis’s very best, appearing in modern compilation releases for new fans.
Storyline
In Dynamite Headdy, the heroic puppet Headdy arrives in North Town only to discover that the evil puppet king Dark Demon is launching an assault on the peaceful toy community. Dark Demon is hunting for toys to either spare or corrupt into his minions, and Headdy is captured, dumped into a dust‑cargo chute and nearly tossed into an incinerator. He manages a daring escape and sets out to stop the tyrant’s plans. Along the way he must battle the Keymasters, Dark Demon’s elite guard who serve as stage‑bosses guarding the path to the king’s castle.
Adding to the chaos is Trouble Bruin, a jealous rival puppet who wants the spotlight for himself and constantly tries to sabotage Headdy. The puppet world is filled with Dark Demon’s minions, and Headdy’s quest is to defeat both the Keymasters and Trouble Bruin before confronting the evil king and restoring peace to his world.
