Summary

Double Dragon II: The Revenge upgrades the classic beat‑em‑up formula with a directional attack system – a left‑attack and a right‑attack button that let you chain punches forward or unleash a back kick, and even pull off a Hurricane Kick for extra flair. The four missions – a bustling heliport, a lumber‑filled storehouse, a rural farm, and the gang’s hidden lair – are peppered with familiar foes wielding shovels, knives, chain whips and grenades, plus environmental objects you can toss at them. A life meter and a ticking timer keep the pressure on, and you lose a life if either runs out, you fall off the screen, or you stumble into spikes.

The Sega Mega Drive port arrived in Japan on December 20 1991 via Palsoft, essentially mirroring the arcade experience with the same moves, weapons and enemy roster (minus Jeff). Mission 2’s layout was expanded and made more intricate, while character sprites were trimmed down in size and color. Players using a six‑button controller may notice a slight input lag when moving with the D‑pad.

Storyline

The arcade version of Double Dragon II: The Revenge opens with a grim twist – Marian, the heroine from the original game, is shot dead by the leader of the Black Warriors. Billy and Jimmy Lee take up the quest to avenge her, fighting through four distinct missions against the gang’s forces. Along the way they confront a roster of bosses: Burnov, Abore, Chin Taimei, and finally the gang leader Willy, who brandishes a machine‑gun that never leaves his hands even when he’s knocked down. After Willy falls in Mission 4, the brothers must battle a shadowy clone called Doppelganger as the final showdown; in two‑player mode each player faces his own duplicate.
