Summary

Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow (originally released as Donald in Maui Mallard) is a quirky side‑scrolling platformer that only made its North American debut via the Sega Channel, never seeing a cartridge because Disney didn’t have a local publishing partner. Brazil got a refined NTSC build a couple of years later, and that version became the template for the PC port.

The core of the game is the constant switch between detective‑duck Maui and his ninja alter‑ego, Cold Shadow. Maui wields an insect‑launching pistol that fires everything from basic bugs to lightning‑charged and fire‑type critters, and you can even combine them for a bigger blast. Transformation hinges on red ninja tokens, while white tokens let you morph without the usual cost; the more tokens you collect, the longer Cold Shadow’s attack chains become. Some sections lock you into Maui—no bungee‑jumping on vines for the ninja.

Levels are surprisingly large and non‑linear, packed with detailed graphics (even dust puffs under Maui’s feet) and hidden routes. The dual‑personality system adds a layer of strategy, forcing you to decide when to blast enemies with bugs and when to navigate tight tunnels with the bo staff, keeping the platforming fresh from start to finish.

Storyline

Disney's Donald Duck stars as the detective Maui Mallard in the Sega Genesis platformer often just called Maui Mallard. The story begins when the island’s guardian idol, Shabuhm Shabuhm, disappears, threatening to make the whole tropical island explode.

Maui is sent to investigate, and his search takes him through a creepy mansion, ancient ninja training grounds where he learns to become the alter‑ego Cold Shadow, and a native village that later throws him into a volcano as a sacrifice. He survives the lava, passes the “test of duckhood,” and earns the islanders’ trust.

The villagers reveal that only a dead man knows the idol’s location, so Maui dives to retrieve the corpse from the sea floor and then journeys through the land of the dead to lay the spirit to rest. The final showdown occurs at the witch doctor’s Mojo Stronghold, where Maui defeats the sorcerer and recovers the idol. Grateful, the islanders rename their home after their hero, even though they worry the name “Mallard” won’t attract tourists.
