Summary

DJ Boy, sometimes called DJ Kid, stands out in the crowded beat‑'em‑up field thanks to its roller‑skating heroes and a soundtrack that leans into late‑80s hip‑hop culture. Instead of pounding the pavement, you glide across city streets, trading punches and kicks while the neon‑lit backdrop pulses to the beat.

The game rewards aggression with "prizes" that can be spent at a shop after each stage; in the home ports these take the form of coins or food items like burgers that restore health. This shop mechanic adds a light layer of strategy to an otherwise straightforward side‑scrolling brawl.

Critics were split: MegaTech praised the fun factor and gave it a solid 78 % but warned it was too easy, while Sega Power slammed it at 30 % for bland graphics, limited moves and unforgiving bosses. Mega later listed the Mega Drive version as the fourth worst on the system, and Console XS settled on a middling 59 %—recognizing its novelty but noting the lack of depth.

Storyline

DJ Boy follows Donald J. Boy, a roller‑fighter who enters the Rollergame, an ultimate fight‑race set in Cigaretch City on the outskirts of New York. He quickly becomes a crowd favorite, but the rival gang the Dark Knights, led by Heavy‑Met Tony, want him out of the competition. Tony orders his crew to kidnap DJ Boy’s girlfriend Maria, who arrives in town and defeats DJ Boy. Determined, DJ Boy must rescue Maria, defeat the Dark Knights, and win the Rollergame.

The arcade version tells a different story. Players control two rollerskaters, Bob and Tom, who are break‑dancing to their boombox when thieves—presumably the Dark Knights—steal it. The duo must track down the thieves, defeat them, and reclaim their boombox.
