Summary
Dinosaurs for Hire lets you pick one of three dinosaur mercenaries—Archie the T‑rex, Lorenzo the Triceratops, or Reese the Stegosaurus—each with its own quirks and combat style. I love how the game lets you fire in any direction while still offering a melee option when foes crowd in, and the two‑player co‑op feels like a chaotic arcade showdown. The five sprawling levels are peppered with bikers, hang‑gliding gunmen, skateboarders, giant insects and even ninjas, all culminating in a larger boss that tests the dino you chose. Development was a true comic‑book crossover: Sega’s Mike Latham, a self‑confessed fan, pushed the project after a 1992 licensing deal, and creator Tom Mason consulted on the lore, even inspiring the flying Cyrano creature. The Lobster engine, built by Christopher Warner and Robert Morgan, powers the fast‑paced action, while a soundtrack from Paul Gadbois and Dave Delia adds a gritty edge. Critics praised the graphics, sound and multiplayer, though many noted the controls felt clunky and the difficulty uneven, giving the title a mixed reception despite its explosive, smart‑aleck charm.
Storyline
Dinosaurs for Hire drops you into a frantic mission to halt a power‑hungry dictator who has released mutant dinosaurs in a bid for world domination. The Earth is besieged by strange monsters and bizarre robotic foes, and only three dinosaur mercenaries stand between chaos and survival.
You control the trio from the comic series: Archie, a Tyrannosaurus rex who leads the team; Lorenzo, a Triceratops with a taste for fine food, wine, and clothing; and Reese, a one‑eyed, unpredictable Stegosaurus. Throughout the action, a Pteranodon named Cyrano swoops in to offer tips before each boss encounter.
The stages take you to iconic spots such as the Empire State Building, the Hoover Dam, and even a Hollywood film set, each swarming with the alien creatures and mechanical menaces that the dinosaurs must defeat.
