Summary

Decap Attack throws you into a bizarre world where you control Chuck D. Head, a headless mummy whose smiling torso does the talking. The island you traverse is literally a giant skeleton, with levels named after its bones—think Abdomainland or Armington—so every jump feels like you’re climbing a rib or a femur.

Combat is oddly satisfying: you jab enemies with Chuck’s protruding face or bounce on them, and a skull power‑up can be tossed like a boomerang, returning to your shoulders unless you get hit. Potions litter the stages, granting temporary invincibility or clearing the screen of foes, while the health system lets you start with up to three hearts and upgrade to five, giving you a decent buffer against the underworld army led by the ever‑present Max D. Cap.

The game even spawned a comic strip in the UK’s Sonic the Comic, where Chuck’s daily misadventures were chronicled alongside a snarky talking skull named Head, a mischievous Igor, and a faux‑German mad scientist, Professor Frank N. Stein, who was secretly a former choirboy from Cardiff. Max only shows up twice in the strip, always with his accountant Rupert urging him to be more villainous.

Critics generally liked the title’s bold, colorful graphics, with MegaTech calling it a “fun‑filled platform game” and Sega Force praising its animation despite noting the gameplay wasn’t groundbreaking. Scores hovered in the 70‑80% range, and Mega even ranked it #22 in their Top Mega Drive Games of All Time.

Storyline

In DecapAttack, the player controls Chuck D. Head, a headless mummy engineered by the mad scientist Dr. Frank N. Stein and his assistant Igor. Stein sends Chuck to stop Max D. Cap, a demon from the Underworld who has seized Body Island and shattered its skeleton‑shaped land into floating pieces. Max commands an endless wave of monsters in an attempt to conquer the surface world.

Chuck battles through the fragmented islands, reassembling the land as he defeats each of Max’s creatures. When the islands are restored and Max D. Cap is finally vanquished, Chuck sluggishly returns to Stein’s lab. As a reward, Stein transforms the headless mummy back into a human.
