Summary

Deadly Moves on the Sega Genesis sneaks a surprising amount of depth into its old‑school fighter formula. Beyond the usual one‑on‑one bouts, the game lets you level up Joe’s strength, speed and endurance—an RPG‑style tweak that felt fresh in the early ’90s. The arena itself is split into two foreground planes, letting attacks swap back and forth like the later Fatal Fury titles, which adds a tactical layer rarely seen on the Genesis.
The roster rolls out a globe‑trotter’s dream: a Hawaiian bruiser, a Thai‑born Chinese fighter, a Russian wrestler with onyx‑tinted skin, a Spanish matador tied to a secret group, a kabuki performer, a Chinese martial artist and a Kenyan tribal chief. A hidden champion, Ranker, is only reachable via secret passwords. Oddly, the game’s cover bragged about ‘deadly’ blood‑splatter for the Genesis, while the Super NES version simply re‑colored the splash as sweat—no real gore inside either version.

Storyline

Deadly Moves on the Sega Genesis puts players in the shoes of Joe, an up‑and‑coming fighter on a quest to claim the title of Champion of Champions.

The single‑player campaign tracks Joe’s progress through a series of increasingly tough opponents, each bout testing his mastery of the game’s signature moves.

At the end of the grind, the final showdown pits Joe against Ranker, the reigning American Champion of Champions, who serves as the ultimate boss.
