Summary
The Genesis port of Dark Castle dazzles with its colored graphics and in‑game music, a step up from the original monochrome experience. The game opens on a storm‑clouded vista of the castle, immediately recognizable by the opening notes of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor, a nod to its 1986 roots. You guide the young hero Duncan, who can run, jump, duck and hurl a limited stash of rocks, while scouting for bottles of elixir that cure the occasional rat or bat bite. Magic items like a shield and fireballs are hidden throughout the four door‑marked sections—Fireball, Shield, Trouble, and the central Black Knight—each leading to a series of increasingly tricky levels; there are fourteen in total, with an “Advanced” setting that throws even more enemies at you. Falling into floor holes doesn’t end the run but drops you into a dungeon (Trouble 3), forcing a clever escape before you can continue your quest.
Storyline
In Dark Castle for the Sega Genesis, the evil Black Knight has been terrorizing the local townspeople. Prince Duncan decides to put an end to the menace. To do so he must explore the castle’s four distinct sections—Fireball, Shield, Trouble, and the Black Knight’s own domain. He first gathers the Fireball and the Shield items, clearing the initial challenges.
With those relics in hand, Duncan reaches the Black Knight’s throne room and topples the throne itself. The defeated knight rises, shaking his fist in fury, while a gargoyle swoops down and carries Duncan onward to the third Trouble area.
