Summary

Darius II, known as Sagaia on the Genesis, keeps the series’ signature non‑linear, branching level map that lets you hop between routes as you clear each sector of the inner Solar System. While the arcade could stretch across three monitors, the home version usually runs on a two‑screen setup, preserving the wide‑screen feel without the extra hardware.

The power‑up system is a colorful throwback to the original: red boosts the missile, green the bomb, and blue reinforces the shield. New yellow pickups grant a laser that behaves like a bomb, and a rainbow item upgrades every weapon at once. Unlike its predecessor, every power‑up you collect actually improves a weapon, and you must completely destroy specific enemy formations to earn them.

Mid‑level “captains” act as minibosses—smaller versions of the first game’s bosses—adding a quick, intense showdown before the main encounter.

The Genesis port drops two‑player support but adds a character choice: Proco Jr. plays the classic way, while Tiat Young starts each life with a modest boost to all weapons. A hidden boss‑rush mode and a few level tweaks, like swapping Steel Spine for a new foe, give the Western release its own flavor.

Storyline

Darius II takes place after the original Darius, when the planet Darius is healing from the Belser Army invasion thanks to the heroes Proco and Tiat. Survivors have relocated to a new world they named Orga, where a space‑flight headquarters intercepts an SOS from Earth, the original home of the first colonists, describing alien ships that resemble the Belser fleet. Believing the signal may come from their long‑lost ancestors, the people of Orga dispatch the next‑generation pilots Proco Jr. and Tiat Young. The duo climbs aboard the Silverhawk after the broadcast is identified as a mayday from another Darius descendant. Their mission is to track down the mysterious fleet, defeat the looming evil force, and restore peace across the galaxy.
