Summary
Cutthroat Island drops you into a swash‑swash world where you can pick either Morgan Adams, a rapier‑wielding heroine, or the sword‑swinging buccaneer William Shaw. The game splits its action into two distinct modes – a precise Swordplay style and a more chaotic Brawling approach – and lets you tackle the ten levels solo or with a friend in split‑screen. Each stage throws a mix of pirates, redcoats and harbour masters at you, but the set‑pieces stand out: a frantic quarry‑cart escape in level two and a runaway horse‑drawn carriage in level five that feels like a roller‑coaster on a cartridge. Scattered throughout are a grab‑bag of weapons – knives, bombs, bottles, torches, hammers, pistols and more – turning every room into a mini‑armory. When the game first hit shelves, Acclaim ran a treasure‑hunt promotion, hiding virtual chests that could be entered for real‑world prizes, adding a layer of meta‑adventure that still feels quirky today.
Storyline
Set in the swash‑swash world of the 17th‑century Caribbean, CutThroat Island follows the legend of a cursed map. In 1619 the pirate cutter Sea Devil seized the Spanish cargo ship Santa Susanna, only to be wrecked on the uncharted Cutthroat Island by a storm. The sole survivor, Fingers Adams, drew a treasure map and tore it into three pieces before dying, handing each fragment to his heirs. Fast‑forward to 1688, the wanted pirate Morgan Adams possesses one fragment and launches a desperate hunt for the remaining pieces, battling both the law and rival treasure‑seekers.
The game, based on the feature film of the same name, lets players control either Morgan Adams or the rival treasure hunter William Shaw. Across ten action‑packed levels, they fight pirates, redcoats and harbour masters while chasing the hidden loot. The storyline blends historical piracy with the film’s high‑seas adventure, giving players a classic retro quest for riches.
