Summary
Contra: Hard Corps brought the Contra formula to the Genesis, debuting the series on Sega hardware. The game lets you pick one of four characters, each with a unique weapon loadout and personality. Branching routes at crucial points mean the same playthrough can end up on completely different stage paths. Despite fitting on a 16 MB cartridge, it packs more than ten diverse levels and several towering bosses.
All stages stay side‑scrolling, though some let you pilot the Motoroid—a hoverbike that becomes an ostrich‑robot for swift attacks. Three buttons cycle four weapon types (A‑D), fire and jump; sliding (down‑diag + jump) grants temporary invincibility. You keep four weapons and bombs, and losing a life only strips the current gun.
Magazines praised its dazzling graphics, huge bosses and intense action, giving it scores in the high 80s and 90s. It returned in the 2019 Contra Anniversary Collection and on the Genesis Mini, cementing its legacy.
Storyline
Contra: Hard Corps is set in 2641 AD, five years after Contra III: The Alien Wars and three years after Black Viper and Emperor Demon Gava died. Terrorists steal alien cells from a military research base, prompting the elite Hard Corps—Ray Poward, Sheena Etranzi, cyborg Brad Fang and robot Browny—to investigate. They discover retired Major (later Colonel) Bahamut has partnered with Dr. Geo Mandrake to forge a bio‑organic weapon from the cells. Bahamut intends to use it to overthrow the world government.
After an early showdown with Bahamut’s mercenary Deadeye Joe, the game branches. One route sends the team on hoverbike chases through mechanical‑spider zones; another tasks them with rescuing a research facility, fighting helicopters and assault planes. Levels span junkyards, alien‑infested jungles and industrial complexes, each ending in a multi‑phase boss. A hidden branch brings back Red Falcon, tying the plot to earlier Contra entries.
Player choices determine the ending: the cell can be destroyed, Bahamut’s orbital station can be destroyed at the cost of the squad, the team can join Bahamut, or they can become trapped in an arena dimension. All outcomes reflect whether the Hard Corps succeeded in stopping Bahamut’s plan to weaponize alien technology and seize Earth.
