Summary
Columns drops three‑symbol stacks into a tall, rectangular well, and I’m constantly sliding them left or right while rotating the jewels inside. When three or more matching symbols line up—horizontally, vertically, or even diagonally—they vanish, the remaining pieces tumble down, and a chain reaction can erupt if new matches form. Occasionally a multicolour Magic Jewel appears, wiping out every gem of the colour beneath it, while the falling speed ramps up, forcing quicker decisions.
Beyond the endless solo mode, the game offers a few twists. In Flash Columns I race to clear a set number of lines and reach a flashing jewel at the bottom, while Doubles lets two players cooperate in the same well, and Time Trial challenges me to rack up points before the clock runs out. The Genesis soundtrack, composed by Tokuhiko Uwabo, even nods to Greek mythology with tracks named after the Moirai.
Even after its original run, Columns has resurfaced on modern collections—from the Sega Genesis Mini to the latest Sega Genesis Classics releases—so the jewel‑matching fun keeps sparkling for new and nostalgic players alike.
Storyline
Travel back to ancient Phoenicia and take on Columns, the puzzle classic beloved by Middle Eastern merchants. Picture the warm Mediterranean shoreline or a lazy sea breeze as you line‑up the falling jewels. The game’s simple yet deep strategy tests both skill and patience. Its timeless appeal lets you forget the passage of time while you chase high scores.
