Summary

Chakan: The Forever Man drops you into a bleak, Giger‑inspired world where you control the eponymous swordsman from a central hub. From there you pick one of four elemental planes—earth, air, fire or water—each offering three tightly designed platforming stages. The hourglass at the bottom of the screen constantly reminds you that you must clear an entire plane before time runs out, otherwise you’re sent back to the hub to start over. Chakan begins with his twin blades, but each element gifts him a new tool, like a grappling hook or a hammer, and you can brew potions that temporarily charge your swords with elemental power or boost your jump. After conquering the twelve “terrestrial” levels, the game ramps up with three tougher stages per element and a final boss, delivering a punishing difficulty that has earned it a small but passionate cult following.

Storyline

Chakan: The Forever Warrior follows the boastful swordsman Chakan, who claims even Death cannot defeat him. Death appears and offers a wager: defeat the Grim Reaper and gain eternal life, or lose and become Death’s eternal servant. After days of battle, Chakan emerges victorious and is granted his reward, but Death curses him to wander the cosmos until every supernatural evil is eradicated. The curse forces Chakan to hunt the four terrestrial evils—Spider‑Queen, Mantis, Elkenrod, and Dragonfly King—and the four elemental foes—Parasite, Tundra Beast, the Last Dragon, and the Leader of the Dragonfly Clan. The player receives a single chance to defeat one cosmic evil as the final boss; failure yields the line “rest will come another day,” while success triggers an hourglass screen and, after fifteen minutes, the cryptic message “Not the end.” Ed Annunziata added this extra boss and message to echo Chakan’s endless, unfulfilled quest.
