Summary
Centurion: Defender of Rome blew me away with its hybrid gameplay. On the Genesis you juggle a turn‑based map where you expand Rome’s reach and then plunge into real‑time battles that pause for you to cue your legions, a design echoing Kelly Beck’s earlier Defender of the Crown. The game sneaks in extra Roman flare, letting you fund gladiatorial ludi, pit chariots in the Circus Maximus, and even command naval engagements. A surprisingly diplomatic side‑track even lets you charm Cleopatra after forging an alliance with Egypt, which feels like a nod to the epic movies Ben Hur and Spartacus that inspired the creator. Bits of Magic’s team, including Nicky Robinson, gave the title that glossy, cinematic feel that still looks sharp on a retro TV, making every campaign feel like a historical farce you can control.
Storyline
Centurion: Defender of Rome drops you into Ancient Rome, 275 BC, where you step into the sandals of a Roman centurion. At the start you command a single legion, but the game quickly expands your responsibilities beyond the battlefield. Success isn’t measured by swords alone; you must also master the political game of "Bread and Circuses" to win the favor of the populace. By stringing together victorious campaigns and shrewd political moves, you work toward the ultimate prize – the title of Caesar. The blend of military strategy and internal politics defines the game’s unique storyline.
