Summary
Bonanza Bros. (sometimes called Bonanza Brothers) feels like a neon‑lit heist film turned into a side‑scrolling arcade adventure. The brothers Robo and Mobo—red and blue, a nod to the Blues Brothers—move through banks, mansions and casinos while the screen stays split for two‑player co‑op, letting each player plot their own sneaky route.
I’m constantly ducking behind doors, columns and large furniture to avoid guards who only stay stunned for a few seconds after a shot or a slammed door. The game mixes platform jumps, zip‑lines and springboards with a strict time limit; miss the clock or get hit by a guard’s projectile, a dog, or a crushing door, and you lose a life, drop all the loot and have to start the stage over.
Critics praised the vivid graphics, catchy soundtrack and the brothers’ cheeky dialogue, earning scores in the 70‑90% range and a spot at #47 on GamesRadar’s best Genesis list. The title survived long after the arcade, appearing in multiple Sega collections and even landing on the Wii Virtual Console in 2007, proving its charm still holds up for retro fans today.
Storyline
In Bonanza Bros., you play as the twin brothers—known as Robo and Mobo in the original Japanese release and as Mike and Spike in some Western marketing—who work as professional burglars. Their job is to infiltrate a variety of buildings, from banks to factories, and steal valuable items while avoiding detection.
In Japan the duo are simply thieves after profit, constantly evading arrest. The Western version adds a twist: the Police Chief of Badville hires them to test security and retrieve evidence from corrupt enterprises, threatening jail time if they fail. Regardless of the setting, the brothers are hired guns who will stop any wiseguys in their path.
