Summary

Blockout takes the classic line‑clearing puzzle formula and thrusts it into a three‑dimensional arena you view from above. Polycube pieces tumble down a rectangular pit, and you can spin them around any of the three axes with three dedicated buttons while sliding them horizontally and vertically on the joystick. When a piece lands, it freezes; completing a solid, gap‑free layer makes the whole face vanish and the blocks above cascade down, rewarding you with extra points—especially if a single piece clears multiple layers.

The game spices things up with a 30‑second bonus round after every fifth level, shrinking the playfield to a 2×2 grid where speed is king. It also supports head‑to‑head duels: each time you clear a layer, your opponent’s stack is nudged up a level, turning the competition into a race to force the other player’s pit to overflow. Studies have even linked Blockout’s spatial‑visualization challenges to improved geometry skills in kids, and reviewers praised its addictive depth, with scores ranging from 67 % to perfect marks on the Lynx version. A modern open‑source sequel and a mobile crossover with Tetris keep the 3D block‑stacking legacy alive.
