Summary

Blaster Master 2 arrived as a North‑American exclusive sequel, created by Software Creations under Sunsoft America’s guidance. The game revives the iconic SOPHIA tank—renamed from the original vehicle—and drops you back into Jason’s world, fresh after the “lightning being” catastrophe that shattered his first mech.

Gameplay stretches across eight distinct stages and swaps among three perspectives: classic side‑scroller action, an overhead arena where SOPHIA spins a 360° turret, and Jason’s own room‑running sequences. Power‑ups abound—homing missiles, three‑way shots, bubble shields, lightning spreads for the tank, plus jetpacks, hover modules, and drills earned from mini‑boss fights like giant bees and worms. Each upgrade stays with either Jason or SOPHIA, letting you tailor your assault as the levels get tighter.

Critics were mixed: MegaTech gave it 81%, Power Unlimited 73/100, while Electronic Gaming Monthly settled on a solid 7/10, averaging a 46.67% score across three reviews. Even with its ambitious camera shifts, the title feels like a love letter to the original while pushing the 16‑bit era forward.

Storyline

Blaster Master 2 picks up four years after Jason’s showdown with the Plutonium Boss and the radioactive mutants that lurked beneath the Earth. A bolt of lightning shatters the barn where he’s been hiding his vehicle, SOPHIA, and knocks him unconscious; when he awakens the tank is broken and its collected parts are gone. Unbeknownst to Jason, the lightning beings that caused the strike are digging toward the planet’s core, hoping to shift Earth off its axis and trigger total annihilation, while repurposing the missing SOPHIA components to build a robotic army. Determined to stop them, Jason spends 29 days rebuilding SOPHIA into the upgraded SOPHIA 4th (2000) model.
Now nineteen and equipped with heat‑resistant body armor and an unlimited‑energy blast cannon on his left arm, Jason tracks the beings’ footprints to the mountains and launches the rebuilt tank into battle. His mission is to thwart the alien plan and finally defeat the Plutonium Boss once and for all. The new SOPHIA boasts features from earlier versions, SOPHIA Nora MA‑01 and MA‑02, giving him a far more capable fighting machine.
