Summary
Beyond Oasis stands out on the Sega Genesis with its Zelda‑ish action‑adventure feel. You guide Prince Ali across a sprawling map, starting with an ever‑reliable knife that can unleash special attacks, and you can swap in a range of breakable weapons—swords, crossbows and bombs—some of which can set foes ablaze. Hidden magic spirits, discovered in shrine rooms, lend abilities that make combat and puzzles more varied. The UI is intuitive, featuring an on‑screen map that updates as you explore, and a mana system that fuels fireballs, meteors and other spells.
Critically the game earned a solid 78 % on GameRankings, praised for its large world, striking graphics and smooth sound. Reviewers noted that its blend of hack‑and‑slash action and light‑RPG elements makes it accessible for newcomers, even if veterans might find the challenge modest. IGN gave the Virtual Console release an 8/10, calling the mechanics “unique” and the style “very stylish.” GamesRadar later listed it 38th among the best Genesis titles, cementing its legacy as a cult classic.
Storyline
In Beyond Oasis, Prince Ali discovers a buried gold armlet once owned by a wizard who fought the holder of a sinister silver armlet. When he slips the armlet on, a fiery face appears and warns him that the gold’s power is now his to wield. The island of Oasis is threatened by the resurgence of the evil sorcerer who seeks to revive his chaos.
The gold armlet can summon four Wild Spirits: Dytto the water spirit, Efreet the fire spirit, Shade the shadow spirit, and Bow the plant spirit. Ali travels across the land, gradually unlocking each spirit’s abilities to aid his quest.
Armed with the spirits, he must confront the one who has claimed the silver armlet and stop the dark ambitions that would plunge the empire into ruin. The adventure blends action, puzzle solving, and a race against time to prevent the sorcerer’s resurrection.
