Summary
The Mega Drive/Genesis edition of Battletoads / Double Dragon (sometimes just called Battletoads & Double Dragon) is a 16‑bit beat ’em up that blends Rare’s Battletoads engine with Technos’ Double Dragon heroes. You can pick from five playables—Billy, Jimmy, Zitz, Pimple or Rash—and each brings a signature move like the Battletoad Butt or the Lee twins’ spin kick, plus new tricks such as hanging off walls and the “Back ’N Front Punt” ledge kick. Gameplay is driven by only two buttons, which forces a simple but sometimes sluggish feel; the title also only offers three continues and no password system, so dying in a two‑player run sends both players back to the start of the level. Development was handled by Rare, who reportedly got minimal guidance from the Double Dragon license holders. Critics noted that the Genesis port failed to capitalize on the console’s hardware—controls feel jerky, audio is thin, and visuals lag behind the SNES version—yet it still holds a quirky charm for fans of the crossover concept.
Storyline
After the Battletoads defeat the Dark Queen on Ragnarok's World, she retreats to the far reaches of the universe. Months later a mysterious energy beam disables Earth's military and a moon‑borne ship called the Colossus erupts, signaling the Queen’s return with a galaxy‑dominating scheme. She teams up with the Shadow Boss and his minions—Abobo, Roper, General Slaughter, Big Blag and Robo Manus—while the Battletoads call on the Double Dragon twins, Billy and Jimmy Lee, for backup. The five heroes launch toward the Colossus, battling through its tail, interior corridors, a space‑craft shooter segment, and a missile hull before confronting the Shadow Boss in stage six and the Dark Queen in the final showdown. Together they aim to stop the two‑pronged threat and save Earth.
