Summary
Playing Battle Master on the Genesis feels like stepping into a sprawling fantasy playground. The isometric view lets me roam from towering castles to underground mines, and I can choose from sixteen leaders spread across four races—human, elf, dwarf, or orc—each paired with a class such as warrior, mage, archer, or merchant. The world is peppered with puzzles, traps, and magic items that keep the action fresh.
What sets the game apart is the blend of arcade combat and light‑tactical control. A simple menu gives me the ability to parley for supplies, rally my followers, or rearrange their formation—row, column or wedge—while the leader fires melee strikes or projectiles. Up to four companions can join, letting me experiment with different formations to suit each encounter.
The difficulty ramps quickly; a handful of traps can end a run, and I must defeat at least three‑quarters of the enemies in each area before the map unlocks further locations. The reward is finding or buying stronger gear, which feels essential against the ever‑hardening monster hordes.
Storyline
The world of Battlemaster is a shattered realm where humans distrust dwarves, dwarves loathe elves, elves despise orcs, and orcs hate everyone. Endless wars have turned rivers to blood and left the land reeking of death.
Into this chaos the mysterious Watcher arrives, sealing away most magic and placing a spell of apathy over the four kings. He proclaims a prophecy: a hero from the south will rise, brave enough to face dragons, clever enough to solve riddles, and seasoned enough to know when to bargain or battle.
Guided by the Watcher’s vision, the hero must buy, loot, and barter to assemble a mighty force, reclaim the four crowns, and bring a new age of harmony to the war‑torn world.
