Summary
Trouble Shooter, known in Japan as Battle Mania, feels like a loveāletter to the Genesis eraās overātheātop shooters. The gameās selfāparody shines through every enemy design and line of dialogue, a deliberate choice by designer Fujito "Takayan" Takada, who fought hard to get the project greenlit after Vic Tokai initially gave it the cold shoulder. Early on Takada handled almost every aspect himself, turning a longāforgotten arcade prototype into a fullāblown console title, and later recruited a small team while he moved into a supervisory role. At the start of each stage you pick a special weapon that must recharge after use, adding a tactical layer to the frantic scrolling action, while the lack of a traditional lives system means you rely on three continues and a steady stream of lifeāup icons to stay alive. A quirky anecdote from development is the inclusion of a scene where the hero stomps on a SuperāÆFamicomāa jab at the budget constraints of competing platformsāthat even prompted a fax to Sega warning against disparaging other companiesā trademarks. The original concept sprang from a manga idea set in the midā1990s, and even the character who explains the weapons went through a wild redesign, swapping a oneāeyed catācreature for the nowāfamiliar Crystal.
Storyline
In Battle Mania, players step into the shoes of Madison, a combat operative tasked with rescuing a kidnapped prince. Madison is never alone; her partner Crystal stays by her side throughout the mission. While Madison handles the frontāline shooting, Crystal can flip her firing position to cover Madisonās rear, giving the duo a 360ādegree defense.
Crystal is also immune to enemy fire, allowing her to act as a moving shield while Madison focuses on the attack. The gameās core narrative revolves around this rescue operation and the teamwork between the two characters.
