Summary
Batman on the Sega Genesis delivers a classic beat‑'em‑up experience that sticks closely to the 1989 movie, even throwing in sections where you pilot Batman’s iconic vehicles. The level design captures the film’s gritty atmosphere, and the backgrounds feel almost as somber as the movie sets themselves.
The soundtrack, composed by Naoki Kodaka—who also scored the NES version—adds a moody, cinematic layer that complements the detailed sprites and fluid animation. Reviewers repeatedly highlighted the graphics and sound, calling them “truly tremendous” and noting how the music enhances the action.
Critics gave the game solid marks: around 70% on GameRankings, with scores ranging from 6/10 (IGN) to the low‑80s from several magazines. Praise focused on its faithful gameplay and visual flair, while the main gripe was that the adventure feels a bit short and easy for seasoned players.
Storyline
In the Sega Genesis version of Batman, players take on the role of the Dark Knight as he hunts the Joker across Gotham City. The game pits Batman against the diabolical Joker, whose evil reign threatens the city’s freedom.
Armed to the teeth, Batman can call on the Batmobile and Batwing, leaping, flying, and dodging enemy fire while battling an army of deadly foes. The action is fast‑paced, with the hero constantly on the move to avoid the Joker’s traps.
The ultimate goal is to reach the Joker’s hideaway and put an end to his terror, securing freedom for Gotham once and for all.
