Summary
Asterix and the Great Rescue is a side‑scrolling platformer that lets you pick either Asterix or his hulking buddy Obelix before each level. The core loop is simple: punch the gauls that block your path, time your jumps to reach higher platforms, and snag useful items like bombs to clear obstacles. What caught my eye was the game’s opening screen, which lets you set the difficulty and even mute the music—a rare courtesy on a 1990s console. The soundtrack itself is noteworthy because it marks Nathan McCree’s debut as a video‑game composer; he later scored the iconic Tomb Raider series. While the Genesis version strips the in‑level character‑swap feature, it keeps the challenge high, a point GamePro called out for its steep difficulty curve and finicky controls. Still, if you enjoy tough puzzles wrapped in classic platform action, this title offers a nostalgic yet demanding experience.
Storyline
Asterix and the Great Rescue (often shortened to Asterix & the Great Rescue) is a Sega Genesis title that adapts the long‑running French comic series Asterix the Gaul. The story is set in 50 B.C., when the Romans have conquered the whole of Gaul except for a single independent village protected by the two legendary warriors, Asterix and Obelix. In the game the duo must first liberate the village of Orvio, then rescue their friend Dogmatix (Idéfix) and the druid Getafix (Panoramix) from the Roman forces that are trying to take over Gaul.
