Summary

The Sega Genesis version of Art of Fighting feels like a time capsule of early‑90s fighting‑game ambition. SNK packed the cartridge with a spirit gauge that drains whenever you pull off a special move, a desperation attack that only appears when your health is flashing low, and a camera that zooms in as the combatants close distance, turning each punch into a cinematic moment.

Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia are the only heroes you can control in the single‑player quest, while the versus mode opens the floor to the rest of the roster, including the gender‑bending powerhouse King, who was modeled after Grace Jones. The design team even wrestled with how to portray a female fighter, ending up with an androgynous look that still stands out among the mostly macho cast.

Visually, the game shines: sprites become bruised and cut as damage accumulates, and the zoom‑in effect was originally so extreme that characters were only visible from the knees up. Critics at the time praised those graphics but dismissed the gameplay as a thinly veiled Street Fighter II copy, calling the move execution requirements clunky and the AI unforgiving.

Despite the mixed reception, Art of Fighting introduced mechanics that became genre staples—super gauges, taunts, dashes, and dynamic scaling—and it seeded the crossover DNA that later blossomed into SNK’s King of Fighters series. Looking back, the Genesis port remains a fascinating study of how a fighting game tried to blend storytelling, strategy, and visual flair into a single cartridge.

Storyline

In the Sega Genesis fighting game Art of Fighting, the story follows Ryo Sakazaki and his best friend Robert Garcia as they hunt for Ryo’s sister Yuri, who has been kidnapped by the mob boss Mr. Big in South Town. Using their Kyokugenryu Karate, the duo battles a roster of foes—including Ryuhaku Todoh, Jack Turner, Lee Pai Long, King, Mickey Rogers, and John Crawley—while making their way through the city’s underworld. After finally confronting and defeating Mr. Big, they are led to an unknown assassin wearing a tengu mask who is holding Yuri captive. The masked opponent is defeated, but Yuri steps in before the final blow, leaving the identity of the killer a cliff‑hanger; in‑game the final boss is simply listed as “?”. The game also marks the beginning of the Sakazaki family saga, with Yuri’s abduction meant to punish her father Takuma and brother Ryo, and sets the stage for the mysterious Mr. Karate later in the series.
