Summary

Another World (known in North America as Out of This World) feels like a living piece of art, thanks to Eric Chahi’s hand‑crafted vector engine and rotoscoped animation. The Sega Genesis version, dropped in 1993, adds a unique prologue and a dynamic musical score that re‑imagines themes from the earlier releases. Gameplay is pure side‑scroll platforming: you run, jump, and fight with a laser pistol that switches between a standard shot, a force‑field generator, and a charged blast capable of punching through barriers. Later you pick up a plasma ball that works like a grenade, adding a tactical layer to the otherwise minimalist combat. There’s no HUD except an oxygen meter when you’re swimming, and any hit is instant death, but generous checkpoints let you retry endlessly, even via alphanumeric codes on older consoles. The alien world’s ambience is conveyed through unintelligible speech and visual storytelling, making the experience feel cinematic without a single line of readable text.

Storyline

Another World opens with young physicist Lester Knight Chaykin pulling up to his high‑tech underground laboratory in a black Ferrari during a thunderstorm. He activates a particle accelerator in an attempt to recreate the conditions of the universe’s birth. A sudden lightning strike interferes with the machine, causing an unexpected particle fusion and a massive explosion. The blast tears open a hole in time and space, flinging Lester onto a barren, alien world.

After fending off several hostile native creatures, Lester is captured by a race of humanoid aliens and thrown into a subterranean prison camp. He manages to break out together with an alien prisoner known only as “Buddy.” The pair must slip past alien soldiers, navigate treacherous caves and a towering structure, and solve a series of environmental puzzles while constantly evading wild beasts.

In the final confrontation, an alien wounds Lester severely, but Buddy helps him defeat the attacker and reach the summit of the tower. Exhausted, Lester collapses, only to be lifted by Buddy, who carries him onto a dragon‑like creature. The duo soar away toward the horizon, leaving the hostile planet behind.
