Summary
The action in Alisia Dragoon explodes the moment the heroine steps onto the screen. Lightning bolts flash from her hands, auto‑targeting foes but weakening as her energy drains, so you must pause to recharge before launching a screen‑filling multi‑target blast. Eight side‑scrolling stages hurl barbarian hordes, centipede swarms and winged gargoyles, each ending with a memorable boss.
Supporting Alisia are four selectable pets—Dragon Frye hurls fireballs, Boomerang Lizard tosses razor‑sharp boomerangs, Thunder Raven unleashes a thunderwave across the field, and Ball O’ Fire burns anything it touches. Only one companion fights alongside you at a time, and power‑ups hidden in secret rooms can revive fallen allies, extend life bars, or grant temporary invulnerability, adding a tactical layer to the frantic combat.
The game's anime roots stem from Gainax, which supplied storyboards and character designs that mix Miyazaki‑esque sci‑fi backdrops with dragons and robots. Mecano Associates provided a synth‑heavy soundtrack that matches the bright sprites and intricate backdrops.
Critics praised the fast reflexes demanded by the energy system and clever pet management, while the North American box showed a bikini‑clad barbarian twist that grabbed attention despite modest sales. Decades later it still ranks among Genesis’ top 100 titles and appears on the Genesis Mini.
Storyline
Alisia Dragoon thrusts players into a fast‑paced quest for revenge and salvation. The heroine, Alisia, is the daughter of a sorcerer who tried to stop the evil prince Baldour. Baldour brutally tortured her father to death before her eyes, leaving her with a burning desire to destroy his lingering threat. Armed with magical powers that rival her father's, she sets out to find and shatter the dormant cocoon Baldour’s aide Ornah has brought to Earth.
The game’s manual fills in the world’s shattered state after Baldour’s previous devastation, but the action jumps straight into Alisia’s assault on his forces. Each level pits her against hordes of enemies, culminating in a showdown with Baldour himself. Defeating the final boss triggers a cinematic cutscene of Alisia’s triumphant return home. The storyline closes with the implication that the world can finally begin to heal.
