Summary

Disney's Aladdin on the Sega Genesis still feels like a moving cartoon. Virgin Games digitized over a thousand hand‑drawn frames from Disney’s animators, so the scimitar‑swinging hero glides across Agrabah with a fluidity that still surprises modern players. The marketing push was massive – a $4 million "Sega Scream" campaign, a CES showcase with costumed dancers, and even a cameo in Aladdin VHS tapes – all to make the cartridge feel like a must‑have holiday gift. Critics at the time called it the Mega Drive’s "new platform king," praising the seamless animation, the film‑faithful music, and the surprisingly tight controls, even if a few noted the game’s gentle difficulty. Its visual triumph forced Nintendo to answer with Rare’s Donkey Kong Country, proving that a 16‑bit platform could still set new standards. With four million copies sold worldwide, the title remains a benchmark for how licensed games can respect their source material while pushing hardware to its limits.
