Play Akira Online

Summary

Akira was slated to become a multi‑platform adaptation of the groundbreaking 1988 anime, with THQ lining up releases for everything from the Super Nintendo to the Game Boy. Development fell to Black Pearl Software, and the Genesis version was earmarked for a mid‑90s launch before internal disagreements with THQ sent the project to the scrap heap.

For years the game existed only in rumor, until a full Genesis ROM surfaced online in 2019, giving fans a glimpse of what might have been. The leaked build showcases the same gritty aesthetic that defined the film, but the gameplay and level design differ markedly from the other abandoned versions. Even in its unfinished state, the title offers a fascinating snapshot of a lost chapter in anime‑to‑game translation.
